Miniature Bell Presented to OCE

"The O.C.E. Victory Bell, purchased in 1889, was 'spirited' away by Portland State students following a basketball game. Three weeks later Portland State President, Jim Caughlin, and other PSC representatives returned the quarter-ton bell and presented during a special assembly a small bell to become a traditional exchange trophy."

Close up of the bell on the rolling cart rolling cart custom made when the bell was removed from the Bell tower. A side note: as of 2019 the cart for the bell is stored in Swendel Hall.

V-J Day Parade
Students ringing a bell on V-J Day, August 14, 1945. Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) marked the day that Imperial Japan surrendered from WWII. When hearing the news, students placed the bell used to signify a winning foorball game on the back of a truck and rode about town ringing the bell.
