Sierra Nevadas and Keddie, California
Train Illustrations - (Illinois to California) - WWII Drawings.
Two pencil drawings of the Utah landscape made on the train while traveling to Marysville, California.
(1.) "California's Sierra Nevadas - These mountains are covered with trees instead of the low grassy vegetation of the Rockies. True to tradition, today is very nice and sunny and I am in 'Sunny California.' "
(2.) "Keddie, California. This is the station area of the town. The town itself is in a valley to the right and is a nice clean little town constructed almost wholly of redwood buildings. There were some carpenters working on the building at the right. They had just constructed a framework for an extension on the building. There was lumber laying all around."

Desert, Rock Formation, Price, and Helper-Utah
Train Illustrations - (Illinois to California) - WWII Drawings.
Four ink drawings of Utah landscape made from the train while traveling to Marysville, California.
The following is written along two sides of the pate, "September 8th 1944 - We had crossed the Rocky Mts. and came into this desert, I went to sleep in the heart of the Rockies and I awoke in the midst of the desolation you see in the top two pictures. The rock formations were very beautiful however."
(1.) "Desert, Utah."
(2.) "Rock Formations, Utah."
(3.) "Price, Utah. One end of town was filled with these small hovels. Just like the deep South."
(4.) "Scene outside Price, Utah"
(5.) "Helper, Utah. This was very impressive."

Helper, Utah; Great Salt Desert; Wendover-State Line
Train Illustrations - (Illinois to California) - WWII Drawings.
Three ink drawings of Utah landscapes made on the train while traveling to Marysville, California.
(1.) "Helper, Utah. These buildings were a part of some industry or other in Helper. The town seemed to be a coal mining center and there was a large railroad yard there."
(2.) "Great Salt Lake Desert. The picture below doesn't do the Great Salt Lake justice. To give a true picture I could have left the whole thing blank, but I waited till I got a little background. The desert is the whiteness in the foreground."
(3.) "Wendover State Line, Utah-Nevada. The approach to the town. There is an air field here hence the beacon on the rocks at the right hand top of the picture. It's a very small town an [sic] it's only excuse for living is the air field and the fact that it's a watering station for trains."

Farm, Mountains, and Landscape: Utah
Train Illustrations - (Illinois to California) - WWII Drawings.
Three pencil drawings of Utah landscapes, drawn on the train ride while traveling to Marysville, California.
(1.) "Farm in Utah. Quite a lonely place. It was miles away from anywhere. The barn is a queer affair with an open front at the top."
(2.) "Mountains - Utah. This is a very beautiful mountain and provided an excellent background for the small farm near the highway. All these farms are fenced in like this and it seems odd when there's so much land all around."
(3.) "Utah Landscape -- I liked the nice soft roundness of the hills and the way the foliage grows on them. It resembles an irregularly cut carpet with thick green nap."
