Pin Oaks Class Gift
These Pin Oak trees are located along the east side of Stadium Drive, west of McArthur Stadium. They were a gift from the graduating class of 1965. -
Dr. Montana Hopkins Richards Walking Bull Memorial Tree and Plaque
Dr. Montana Hopkins Richards Walking Bull was a humanities professor from 1963-1978, and she was a member of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma. A nationally recognized scholar and author, she passed away at the age of 74.
The plaque reads "In memory of Dr. Montana H. R. Walking Bull 1913-1987 Teacher Author Friend '...Like the sacred eagle my spirit roams on this sacred mother earth.'"
This memorial sequoia tree is located in the Grove near the New Physical Education Building. -
Virginia Tech University Memorial Tree and Plaque
This flowering cherry tree is located on the lawn between Landers Hall and the Lot J Loop parking lot. It was dedicated in 2008, and the plaque reads "This living memorial is dedicated to the 32 Virginia Tech University faculty and students whose lives were tragically taken from them on April 16, 2007."
In the photograph, the Virginia Tech University Memorial Tree is located on the right side of the image. The tree in the center with the golden shovels is the Whitney Bellinghausen Memorial Tree. -
Tiananmen Square Memorial Tree
Originally planted outside the College Center, this tree was moved to its current location on the west lawn of Landers Hall. The plaque reads "This living memorial is dedicated to the students of the People's Republic of China who fell in defense of human rights on June 4, 1989 in Beijing's Tiananmen Square." -
Symbol of Life Tree and Plaque
This Katsura tree was planted in honor of Western Oregon State College (WOSC) parents on June 9, 1990. Native to China and Japan, this deciduous tree typically grows 40-60ft high. The rounded, heart-shaped leaves develop a "soft apricot-orange color" in the fall, particularly if grown in acid soil. The Symbol of Life Tree and Plaque is located on the east lawn of the New Physical Education building just to the right of the sidewalk.
The plaque reads "A symbol of life dedicated to parents who have given so much of themselves for the education of their children. Commencement, June 1990." -
Kurt Singletary Memorial Tree
This Red Flowering Dogwood tree is located on the west side of Valsetz Dining Hall in memory of Kurt Singletary who worked at the dining hall. The plaque reads "In memory of Kurt E. Singletary. A caring friend who made us smile. Dedicated by Valsetz Dining Hall students and co-workers, 2001." -
Somei-Yoshino Cherry Tree
Located on the south lawn of University Park Conference Center unit C, this tree was planted in 1992 by Kimihiro Fujimaki. The Somei-Yoshino Cherry tree is native to Japan and was donated to Western Oregon State College in memory of the Research and Educational Exchange between WOSC and Saitama University. -
Reece Aaron Ritz Memorial Tree and Plaque
Located on the practice football field, McArthur Field, this tree was planted in memory of Reece Aaron Ritz (1975-1997). Reece was a Criminal Justice major and an athlete. -
Raywood Ash Tree
This tree is located on the southeast corner of Heritage Hall. The date of planting is unknown. It was thought to have been planted by the Oregon Public Safety Academy Class 209, but it was purchased with collaboration of the Student Body President. The tree was planted as a replacement tree for one of the original Raywood Ash Trees planted when Heritage Hall was landscaped.
Ron Cooper, former landscape supervisor, contributed the following information: "The memorial 'Raywood Ash' is the second tree from the right; just next to the Incense Cedar on the far right. It is the smaller tree because it was a replacement tree for one of the original 'Raywood Ash' trees planted when Heritage Hall was landscaped. It replaced a tree that went down in a previous storm." -
Carol Pickering Memorial Tree
This American Sweetgum tree was planted in memory of Oregon College of Education graduate, Carol Pickering, who died in an automobile accident November, 1975.
The tree was "originally planted at the north end of the field hockey field, which is where the weight throw complex is now. When Stadium Drive was built in the mid to late 1980's, we built two new softball fields which is where they are now. We moved the tree again to it's present location. So, the tree was planted, then moved twice. All through this the tree has thrived," according to former landscape supervisor, Ron Cooper. While there is no permanent marker, Cooper notes that the original wooden plaque said "A Sweet Gum for a sweet girl." The tree is now located one the softball field west of campus.
Pickering graduated from Oregon College of Education in 1975 with a B.S. in Education. She played both softball and field hockey. One of Pickering's former teammates, Sherry Adams designed and burned the letters into the original wooden plaque.

Marci Lynn Pahl Memorial Tree
Marci Lynn Pahl was a junior at Western Oregon State College studying elementary education. Pahl was a transfer student from Chemeketa Community College in 1992. She was killed in a car accident in January, 1993. In her memory, a flowering 'Thundercloud' plum tree was planted in the Landers promenade.
The plaque reads "In Memory of Marci Lynn Pahl Sep. 22, 1971 to Jan. 11, 1993 She gave the gifts of love and laughter." -
Japanese Camellia Tree
This tree was a gift from the Japanese Ambassador during his campus visit in 1990. It is located on the north side of the Administration Building. -
The New Grove Plaque
The dedication plaque is located at the southeast corner of the new grove, bounded by Ackerman Hall to the north and McArthur field on the south, the New Physical Education Center to the west and the Werner University Center to the east. The plaque details the history of the grove, both old and new. The grove began in 1867 and was located south of Campbell Hall. Most of the trees were destroyed in the 1962 Columbus Day Storm. South of Bellamy Hall a few trees, the last of the original grove, remain. Beginning on the tenth anniversary of the storm, Alumni, friends of the college, students, faculty, and college staff began the new grove in the location it is today. -
Sharon Christa McAuliffe Memorial Tree
A Kwanzan flowering Cherry Tree was planted in memory of Sharon McAuliffe. McAuliffe was a teacher from the East Coast, who was also a participant in the NASA Teacher in Space Project. She and six other crew members were killed in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. The tree is located on the west lawn of the Cottage.
The plaque reads "She dared to expand the horizon of education. In Memory of Sharon Christa McAuliffe A Teacher and the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger January 28, 1986." -
Selma Leinwand Memorial Tree
An Italian Cypress was planted in 1989 in memory of "Western's first lady," Selma Leinwand. She was married to Gerald Leinwand, who served as President of Oregon College of Education and Western Oregon State College 1977-1982. The tree is located on the lawn between Rice Auditorium and parking lot A, near the outdoor stage. -
Deborah Fell and Tamara Griffith Memorial Plaque and Tree
Deborah "Debbie" Marie Fell and Tamara "Tammy" Lee Griffith were two students killed in a car accident on April 23, 1976. To honor their memory, a cherry tree with a plaque were dedicated to them. The tree is located in a corner on the west lawn of Landers Hall. -
Donovan Burbank Memorial Tree
A Willamette Valley Ponderosa pine tree was planted in January 2002 for Donovan Burbank. Burbank was a groundskeeper who loved to ride horses through the Ponderosa and who passed away in 2001. The tree is located on the east side of the Grove.

Whitney Bellinghausen Memorial Tree
A memorial Cherry Blossom tree was planted for Whitney Bellinghausen after her death in 2008. Bellinghausen was an American Sign Language student who passed away after being severely injured in a car accident in February, 2008. The tree was dedicated in October, 2008 on her 21st birthday, and it is located between Landers Hall and Lot J.
The image is from the dedication ceremony where the tree is in the middle of the image. Two golden shovels are behind it and were used to plant the tree. To the left of the tree is a statue of a white dog with pink spots wearing a pink hat. In the background Landers Hall and other trees can be seen. -
John Edward Bellamy Memorial Tree
A memorial Flowering Cherry Tree was planted for John Edward Bellamy. Bellamy was a Professor of Humanities from 1955-1982, and he passed away in 2000. The tree is located near the front entrance to Hamersly Library on the south side.
The image is of the tree in spring where it is covered in blossoms. The tree takes up the majority of the frame, but a blue sky and the library can be seen in the background.
The plaque beneath the tree reads "John Edward Bellamy 11-18-1917 - 9-25-2000 Professor of Humanities 1955-1982 'He gave us a different way to be, and it was our better selves that he nurtured.' L. Pollock '72." -
Edward Fletcher Barrows Memorial Tree
A Sugar Maple memorial tree planted for Edward Fletcher Barrows. Edward Barrows was a Professor of Science from 1932-1957. Barrows passed away in 1991. The tree is located on the south side of the Cottage and behind Campbell Hall.
The photograph is of the maple tree located in the center right of the image. The leaves at the top have begun to turn orange. Behind the tree is the Cottage.
The plaque beneath the tree reads "In memory of Edward Fletcher Barrows 1900-1991 Professor of Science 1932-1957 Whose habit it was to examine the riddles of life with patience, humor, and vision." -
Dr. Robert E. Albritton Memorial Tree
A Korean dogwood tree planted in memorial to Dr. Robert E. Albritton, a longtime professor of elementary Education, who served from 1965-1984. The tree is located between the Old College of Education building and the Instructional Technology Center.
In the photograph the tree is in the center of the image and is covered in white flowers. In the background, there is the south entrance to the Old College of Education building.
